Kim Caldwell Named Head Coach of Tennessee Women’s Basketball Program
Kim Caldwell is set to take on the challenge of leading the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball program after a successful stint at Marshall. Caldwell, who led Marshall to an NCAA tournament appearance in her first season, will be formally introduced as the new head coach at a news conference on Tuesday.
In her lone season at Marshall, Caldwell guided the Thundering Herd to a remarkable 26-7 record, including a dominant 17-1 mark in conference play. Marshall captured both the regular season and tournament championships in the Sun Belt, earning a spot in the NCAA tournament as a No. 13 seed. Although the Herd fell in the first round to Virginia Tech, Caldwell’s coaching prowess was evident throughout the season.
Prior to her time at Marshall, Caldwell enjoyed a successful seven-year tenure at Division II Glenville State, where she amassed an impressive 191-24 record. In 2022, Caldwell led the Pioneers to a historic 35-1 season and the program’s first national championship.
Caldwell’s hiring marks a shift in philosophy for Tennessee, as athletic director Danny White opted for a coach with a proven track record of success rather than a connection to the program’s legendary coach, Pat Summitt. White expressed confidence in Caldwell’s ability to bring the Lady Vols back to a championship level, citing her innovative coaching style and winning formula.
As Caldwell prepares to embark on this new chapter in her coaching career, the Lady Vols and their fans are eager to see what she can accomplish at the helm of one of the most storied programs in women’s college basketball. Welcome to Rocky Top, Coach Caldwell!
