Franklin Regional’s Jesse Reed Named Pittsburgh Union Progress Boys Basketball Coach of the Year

Ten years ago, Jesse Reed experienced the thrill of March Madness as a player at American University. Fast forward to today, and Reed is now making headlines as the head coach of Franklin Regional’s boys basketball team, leading them to an impressive season that culminated in a trip to the WPIAL and PIAA championship games.

After a tough season in 2022-23 that saw the Panthers finish with 10 consecutive losses, Reed and his team bounced back in a big way this year. With a record of 27-4, Franklin Regional claimed the Class 5A Section 3 title and made it to the WPIAL final for the first time since 2018. They also reached the PIAA final for the first time since 1997, ultimately falling to nationally ranked Imhotep Charter.

For his outstanding coaching efforts, Reed has been named the Pittsburgh Union Progress boys basketball Coach of the Year. This accolade is a testament to the hard work and dedication Reed has put into leading his team to success.

Reflecting on his journey from player to coach, Reed credits his time playing professionally in Luxembourg and his coaching stints at Saint Vincent and Carnegie Mellon for preparing him for the challenges of coaching at the high school level. His decision to focus on high school basketball has paid off, as evidenced by the remarkable turnaround he has orchestrated at Franklin Regional.

The Panthers’ impressive season was fueled by a talented group of seniors who have left a lasting impact on the program. Despite falling short in the PIAA final, the team’s journey to the championship game will be remembered as a historic achievement for Franklin Regional.

As Reed and his players reflect on the season that was, they can take pride in the memories they have created and the legacy they have left behind. With a bright future ahead, Franklin Regional’s boys basketball program is in good hands under the leadership of Coach Jesse Reed.
