Basketball Journey of Eric Hinrichsen: From Carihi Secondary School to the 2000 Canadian Olympics Team

Former Canadian Olympian and professional basketball player Eric Hinrichsen is set to be inducted into the Basketball BC Hall of Fame as part of the 2023 class.

Hinrichsen’s basketball journey began in Grade 6 when he started playing with his brother and his friends on Quadra Island. His passion for the game grew under the guidance of his brother and his high school teacher, John Frishholz, who both played a significant role in shaping his love for basketball.

During his time at Carihi Secondary School, Hinrichsen led the Tyees to an ‘AA’ Provincial Championship in 1993 and a third-place finish at the ‘AAA’ Provincial Championship in 1994, where he was named the Most Valuable Player. His high school success paved the way for a collegiate career at the University of Victoria, where he excelled and won numerous awards, including the national championship in 1997.

In 1999, Hinrichsen turned professional and joined Bree B.B.C. in Belgium, where he played for three seasons before moving to France and later the Netherlands. Despite facing some injuries during his career, Hinrichsen continued to showcase his talent on the court.

His basketball journey reached its peak when he represented Canada at the 2000 Summer Olympics, an experience he describes as the pinnacle of his career. Although Canada fell short in the quarter-finals, Hinrichsen cherished the opportunity to compete on the world stage.

After retiring from professional basketball, Hinrichsen returned to Canada and has been actively involved in coaching youth basketball. His induction into the Basketball BC Hall of Fame is a testament to his contributions to the sport and his lasting impact on the basketball community.

The Hall of Fame Gala, where Hinrichsen will be honored alongside other basketball greats, is set to take place on September 7 at the Langley Events Centre. It will be a night to celebrate his remarkable career and legacy in the world of basketball.
