IHSA Extends Boys’ Basketball State Tournament in Champaign Through 2029
After a 26-year absence, the Illinois High School Association boys’ basketball state tournament made its triumphant return to Champaign in 2022. And now, it seems like it’s here to stay for the foreseeable future.
The IHSA Board of Directors recently approved a five-year extension to keep the boys’ basketball state tournament at State Farm Center in Champaign through 2029. This decision comes after the initial three-year contract expired, solidifying Champaign’s status as the home of America’s Original March Madness.
Champaign has a rich history with the boys’ basketball state tournament, serving as the host city from 1919 through 1995. Venues such as Kenney Gym, Huff Gym, and the Assembly Hall all played a role in shaping the tournament’s legacy before it moved to Peoria in 1996. However, the event returned to Champaign in 2022, and the community has embraced it with open arms.
The three-day, four-class event brings together 16 teams to compete at State Farm Center, a venue that underwent a major renovation in 2015. The tournament has not only brought economic growth to the area but has also created lasting memories for players, coaches, and fans alike.
In addition to the extension, the IHSA announced that the three-day format introduced in 2022 will remain in place. The daily game and time schedule will be reviewed by the IHSA basketball advisory committee before being finalized at the Board of Directors meeting in June.
Furthermore, the IHSA is in negotiations to keep the girls’ basketball state tournament at CEFCU Arena in Normal through 2029. The venue, located on the Illinois State University campus, has been the host of the girls’ tournament since 1992.
Overall, the future looks bright for high school basketball in Illinois, with Champaign and Normal set to continue hosting these prestigious events for years to come.
