The Rise of Women’s College Basketball: Record-Breaking Season and Increased Interest
The 2023-2024 women’s college basketball season may have come to a close, but the excitement and interest in the sport are just getting started. This past year saw record-breaking ticket sales, increased viewership, and a surge in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals for women athletes.
All five power conferences reported high ticket sales ahead of March Madness, with the University of Iowa experiencing a 162% increase in average ticket sale prices compared to last season. Much of this increase is attributed to Iowa’s star player, Caitlin Clark, who broke NCAA scoring records this season. The intense matchups between Clark and other standout players like Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers, and Kamilla Cardoso also contributed to the heightened interest in the sport.
Following South Carolina’s victory in the NCAA Tournament Championship, head coach Dawn Staley credited Clark for elevating the sport and thanked her for lifting up women’s basketball. The Final Four matchups and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final drew record-breaking viewership numbers, with millions tuning in to watch the games.
Women’s basketball has also seen a significant increase in NIL deals, with brands like Nike, Reebok, and New Balance signing college athletes to endorsement deals. NBA players like Steph Curry are also investing in women athletes, further highlighting the growing popularity and marketability of women’s basketball.
As players like Clark and Cardoso prepare for the WNBA, the momentum for women’s basketball is at an all-time high. With increased visibility, support, and recognition, women athletes are finally getting the attention and opportunities they deserve in the world of sports.
