American University Basketball Attendance: A Look at School Spirit Culture and Comparisons within the Patriot League
American University’s sports culture may not be as prominent as other universities, but the Eagle fans are still passionate about their basketball teams. With football and baseball not being major sports at AU, basketball takes the spotlight during the late fall and early spring semesters.
The men’s basketball program at AU reported a total attendance of 15,907 for the 2023-24 season, while the women’s program reported 6,789 attendees. While these numbers may not compare to powerhouse programs like South Carolina and UConn, they do reflect the school spirit and sports culture at AU.
When compared to other Patriot League schools, AU falls in the middle in terms of attendance per game for men’s basketball. Despite not having the highest attendance numbers, AU’s total attendance for the year ranked fourth in the conference, showing consistent support from fans.
Gaby Waksburg, a junior at AU, noted that the school’s size and focus on academics may contribute to the lower attendance numbers. However, she also highlighted the community involvement and themed games that draw larger crowds to the games.
Despite lower attendance figures compared to some of its peers, AU’s sports teams and the student-run Blue Crew continue to promote community involvement and school spirit through various events and themed games. While AU may not have the largest attendance numbers, the passion and support from Eagle fans are still evident at every game.
