Saint Mary’s Softball Dominates Conference Opener with Two Wins
Saint Mary’s softball team started off their conference schedule with a bang, securing two impressive wins against St. Catherine in Winona. The Cardinals, with a record of 14-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, showcased their dominance on the field.
In the first game, the Cardinals utilized the power of the long ball, with sophomore catcher Peyton Berg and sophomore infielder Emily Bonk each hitting two-run home runs to lead the team to an 8-0 victory over the Wildcats. Freshman pitcher Makayla Steffes also shined, pitching a shutout game with five hits allowed and one walk.
The second game was a closer affair, with both teams locked in a scoreless tie until the sixth inning. Saint Mary’s then unleashed a five-run rally, relying on small ball tactics to take a 5-0 lead. Despite a late surge from the Wildcats in the seventh inning, the Cardinals held on for a 5-4 win, with Steffes coming in to earn a save.
In other softball action, Winona State split a doubleheader against Northern State, with the Warriors bouncing back from a loss in the first game to secure a victory in the second. Junior pitcher Abby Smith delivered a strong performance in the win, going the distance with two earned runs on nine hits and four strikeouts.
Overall, it was a successful day for both Saint Mary’s and Winona State softball teams, as they continue to showcase their talent and determination on the field. Fans can look forward to more exciting matchups as the season progresses.
