Struggles Continue for LSU Baseball in 2024 Season
The LSU baseball team is off to a rocky start in the 2024 season, with a 20-9 overall record and a disappointing 2-7 conference play record. The Tigers have dropped all three series so far, losing to Mississippi State, Florida, and getting swept by Arkansas last weekend.
The struggles can be traced back to the departure of key players from the 2023 season, including Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews, the No. 1 and No. 2 overall draft picks in the 2023 MLB draft. With six hitters and two starting pitchers gone, Coach Jay Johnson had to rebuild the team through recruiting high school players and transfers. However, some players are simply irreplaceable.
Offensively, LSU is in the middle of the pack in most hitting statistics in the conference, ranking low in RBI, runs scored, and home runs. The team leads the conference in double plays and caught stealing, indicating a lack of offensive efficiency.
On the mound, Luke Holman has been a standout performer with impressive stats, but the rest of the pitching staff has struggled with high walk counts and wild pitches. The team’s fielding percentage is also subpar, with errors costing them crucial plays.
Despite the challenges, LSU will look to turn things around as they face Southern at home before hosting Vanderbilt this weekend. Fans will be hoping for a strong performance from the Tigers as they aim to improve their conference standing.
