Celebrating the 1988 Ursuline State Championship Baseball Team

The 1988 Ursuline state championship baseball team was honored in a special ceremony at Bob Cene Park on Saturday, bringing back memories of their historic season 36 years ago. The team, which went 29-5 and finished as co-champions of the Steel Valley Conference, was celebrated for their incredible run to the Class AA crown.

Led by head coach Matt Giambattista, the Fighting Irish put together a remarkable postseason performance, going 8-0 and capturing the state title. Giambattista, who started the Ursuline baseball program in 1975, returned in 1983 and guided the team to their first ever state championship in 1988.

The team was a cohesive unit with a strong bond and a shared goal of winning it all. Players like Ron Bunofsky, Frank Czopur, Kevin Schultz, and Bill Metzinger all played key roles in the team’s success, with Metzinger leading the team in hitting and pitching.

The Fighting Irish’s journey to the state title was filled with memorable moments, including a dramatic comeback win over Campbell Memorial in the district championship game. That win sparked a feeling of destiny within the team, propelling them to victories in the state semifinals and finals.

The reunion at Bob Cene Park was a chance for the players to reminisce about their championship season and celebrate the lasting impact it had on their lives. Assistant coaches Mike Popio and Troy Radinsky, as well as other team members, were also in attendance to share in the special moment.
