Stephen Strasburg Officially Listed as Retired by MLB

After a career filled with highs and lows, Stephen Strasburg has officially been listed as retired by Major League Baseball. The 2019 World Series MVP, whose career was plagued by injuries, has decided to hang up his cleats for good.

The news of Strasburg’s retirement was not unexpected, as rumors had been circulating for quite some time. In August, it was reported that the hard-throwing right-hander had made the decision not to try to resume pitching. Now, with his official retirement listed by MLB, it marks the end of an era for the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft.

Strasburg’s career was filled with promise and potential, but injuries ultimately derailed his path to stardom. Despite leading the Nationals to their first championship in franchise history in 2019, Strasburg struggled to stay healthy and on the field. His last start in June 2022 ended prematurely, and he underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, a nerve and blood disorder that required the removal of a rib and two neck muscles.

Throughout his career, Strasburg amassed an impressive record of 113-62 with a 3.24 ERA in 247 regular-season starts, all with Washington. He was a three-time NL All-Star and led the National League in strikeouts in 2014 and innings pitched in 2019. His memorable debut in 2010, known as “Strasmas,” showcased his potential as a generational talent.

While Strasburg’s career may have been cut short by injuries, his impact on the game of baseball will not be forgotten. As he officially enters retirement, fans and teammates alike will remember the highs and lows of a career that was filled with promise and potential.
