Manhattan High Baseball Battles Olathe Northwest in Windy Doubleheader at Norvell Field
Manhattan High baseball faced off against Olathe Northwest in a windy doubleheader at Norvell Field over the weekend, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. Despite the challenging conditions, the Indians managed to split the series with the Ravens, winning the first game 5-4 and falling in the second game 9-1.
In the first game, senior Jake Wolcott delivered a strong performance on the mound, striking out nine batters over six innings. The Indians got on the board early with an RBI double from sophomore Sawyer Newton, taking a 1-0 lead. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning before the Ravens mounted a comeback, scoring four runs to take the lead.
However, Manhattan rallied in the seventh inning, with Newton coming up clutch with a game-tying triple. Sophomore Jackson Goos then drove in the go-ahead run with a single, securing the 5-4 victory for the Indians.
In the second game, the Ravens jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, ultimately winning 9-1. Senior Landon Ott struggled on the mound for Manhattan, while Olathe Northwest’s Preston Harris dominated with 10 strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.
Despite the loss, head coach Don Hess praised his team’s effort and highlighted the need to capitalize on opportunities. The Indians will look to bounce back in a doubleheader against Junction City on Tuesday, aiming to improve their standing in league play.
