Los Gatos Baseball Team Bonds and Wins in Tennessee Trip
The Los Gatos Wildcats baseball team recently embarked on a unique journey to middle Tennessee, where they not only dominated on the field but also gained a newfound appreciation for the southern hospitality and culture.
Coach Mike Minkel, a Cumberland University alum, organized the trip to his old stomping grounds, where the team faced off against unfamiliar opponents in a small town called Lebanon. Despite being thousands of miles away from home, the Wildcats quickly adapted to the southern way of life, learning the importance of respect and kindness towards strangers.
The team’s fundraising efforts paid off as they secured three impressive victories, including a notable win over Mookie Betts’ alma mater, Overton High. Standout players Brayden Smith and Lucas Carlisle shined in the humid conditions, showcasing their talent with home runs against a tough Nashville team.
While the Wildcats remained focused on the field, they also took time to enjoy the sights and sounds of Tennessee. From attending a Vanderbilt baseball game to exploring the vibrant Broadway Street, the players immersed themselves in the local culture, creating lasting memories along the way.
One of the highlights of the trip was a team BBQ on the Cumberland river, where the players disconnected from their phones and embraced the beauty of nature. Coach Minkel was touched by the camaraderie and unity displayed by his team, emphasizing the importance of human connection beyond geographical boundaries.
As the Wildcats returned to California, Coach Minkel hoped that his players would carry the lessons learned in Tennessee with them, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for different regions and their inhabitants. Ultimately, the trip served as a reminder that, regardless of background or beliefs, we are all united by our shared humanity.
