Chino shuts out Ramona in CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoff opener
In a thrilling CIF Southern Section Division 5 first-round playoff game, the Chino Cowboys emerged victorious with a 5-0 win over the Ramona Rams. The game showcased a pitching duel between Chino’s Paccelli Nieto and Ramona’s Jake Valenzuela, with Nieto ultimately coming out on top.
Nieto was dominant on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters in his first playoff start for Chino. His stellar performance helped lead the Cowboys to their second first-round playoff victory in coach Michael St. Esteben’s four seasons with the team.
On the other side, Valenzuela, a standout receiver on Ramona’s championship football team, put up a strong effort, allowing only one unearned run and striking out three batters. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Chino’s offense.
The loss marked the end of the high school careers for several players from Ramona’s championship football team, adding to the disappointment for the Rams. Despite Valenzuela’s efforts to keep the game close, Chino was able to capitalize on opportunities and secure the win.
Chino now looks ahead to a second-round matchup against the Lakeside-Anaheim winner, with Nieto and the rest of the team eager to continue their playoff run. With key contributions from players like Nathen Sena and Evan Herrera, the Cowboys are poised for success as they aim to advance further in the postseason.
The game was a testament to the importance of capitalizing on scoring opportunities in the postseason, as Chino’s ability to put runs on the board proved to be the difference-maker in their victory over Ramona. As the playoffs continue, Chino will look to build on this momentum and make a deep run in the Division 5 tournament.
