Former Interpreter for Shohei Ohtani Charged with Bank Fraud, Accused of Stealing $16 Million

Former interpreter for baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani, Ippei Mizuhara, is facing a federal charge of bank fraud after allegedly stealing over $16 million from Ohtani, as announced by a US attorney in Los Angeles.

Mizuhara reportedly made unauthorized transfers from Ohtani’s bank account from November 2021 until January 2024, taking advantage of his close relationship with the Japanese star to finance his illegal sports betting activities. Ohtani, considered a victim in this case, was unaware of Mizuhara’s actions, as confirmed by law enforcement.

The fraudulent activities came to light when Ohtani’s lawyers accused Mizuhara of massive theft and placing bets with a bookie under federal investigation while the Dodgers were in South Korea for an MLB season-opening series in March.

Mizuhara, who was fired last month after the alleged theft was discovered, is expected to appear in federal court soon to face the charge of bank fraud. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

The prosecutor highlighted the scale of Mizuhara’s fraud, emphasizing his elaborate schemes to impersonate Ohtani and deceive bank employees to approve large wire transfers for his illegal gambling activities.

The story continues to develop, with CNN’s Nick Watt contributing to the ongoing investigation. Stay tuned for more updates on this shocking case of betrayal and fraud in the world of sports.
