Dusty Baker Receives Baseball Digest’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Sacramento-area native Dusty Baker has added another prestigious accolade to his illustrious baseball career, as he was awarded the fourth Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Baseball Digest. The 74-year-old retired baseball legend spent an impressive 56 years in the majors as a player, coach, and manager before calling it a career following the 2023 season.

Baker joins an esteemed list of recipients of the award, including baseball icons Willie Mays, Vin Scully, and Joe Torre. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given annually to a living individual who has made significant contributions to Major League Baseball throughout their career.

In a statement following the announcement of the award, Baker expressed his gratitude and humility, stating, “Receiving this award is a tremendous honor. I never thought that I’d be in the class of the people that received this award. I know that my late mom and dad would be proud of me. This is really special.”

Throughout his playing career, Baker was a standout outfielder, earning two All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger awards, and a Gold Glove. He also made a significant impact in the postseason, winning the NL Championship Series MVP in 1977 and helping the Los Angeles Dodgers secure a World Series title in 1981.

After transitioning to coaching and managing, Baker continued to excel, winning three NL Manager of the Year awards and leading five different franchises to division titles. His crowning achievement came in 2022 when he guided the Houston Astros to a World Series championship.

Commissioner Rob Manfred praised Baker for his leadership, goodwill, and winning baseball, stating, “Dusty represents leadership, goodwill, and winning baseball. His ability to connect with others, across generations, is second to none. He is a championship manager and player. But, most importantly, Dusty is an extraordinary ambassador for our national pastime.”

Baker’s impact on the game of baseball is undeniable, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and fans alike.
