West Plains Makes History with Convincing Win Over Canyon in District Clash
West Plains baseball made history on Friday with a dominant 11-0 win over Canyon in a District 4-4A clash. The Wolves, ranked No. 21, put on a hitting clinic, led by Bryton Bertrand’s three-run home run in the first inning that set the tone for the game.
West Plains’ offensive onslaught continued with eight straight hits in the first inning, knocking out Canyon’s starting pitcher early. Kaden Dorman and Ethan Bentley also delivered key hits to give the Wolves a commanding 9-0 lead after the first inning.
Garrett Hamilton added to the lead with a two-run double in the third inning, sealing the victory for West Plains. On the mound, Ethan Bentley was stellar, pitching a shutout with nine strikeouts and no walks.
The win not only marked West Plains’ first-ever victory over a Canyon ISD school but also tied them with Canyon for second place in the district behind Randall. Speaking of Randall, the No. 14 Raiders maintained their lead in the district with an 8-0 win over Dumas.
Elsewhere in District 4-4A, Amarillo High continued their dominance with a 12-2 win over Palo Duro, while Caprock secured a crucial win over Tascosa to move into a tie for third place in the standings.
In other district action, Bushland rolled to a 21-4 win over Dimmitt, River Road picked up their first district win with an 11-5 victory over Dalhart, and Tulia defeated Friona 13-3.
Over in District 1-2A, Gruver edged out Sunray in a thrilling 6-5 win in eight innings, while West Texas High cruised to a 12-2 victory over Boys Ranch.
Overall, it was a weekend filled with exciting baseball action and standout performances as teams jockeyed for playoff positioning in their respective districts.
