Recap of the Michal Rejmer 10-Mile Event
The third edition of the Michal Rejmer 10-Mile race took place last Sunday, starting from Limerick Racecourse in dry conditions. The event, held in memory of the beloved Dooneen AC athlete, attracted a strong field of runners eager to test themselves over the challenging distance.
In the men’s race, Peter Somba of Ratoath AC emerged victorious, setting a new course record with a blistering time of 52:40. Somba led from start to finish, with Karl Fitzmaurice of Shannon AC hot on his heels but ultimately settling for second place in 53:08. Declan Guina of West Limerick was the first local runner to cross the line in a time of 55:34.
On the women’s side, Breda Gaffney of Mallow AC claimed the top spot in 1:06:02, followed by Irene Eighan of St Finbarr’s in Cork. Pamela Kirby of Bilboa was the first Limerick woman to finish, coming in third overall in 1:08:50.
In the team standings, Dooneen and West Limerick were tied on points, with the hosts ultimately securing the victory thanks to a better fourth-place finisher. The event saw a total of 255 finishers, an increase from the previous year, with participants praising the well-organized and enjoyable race.
The success of the Michal Rejmer 10-Mile race solidifies its place in the Munster spring running calendar, providing a challenging yet rewarding experience for runners of all levels. With plans already underway for next year’s event, the excitement and anticipation for the race continue to grow among the running community.
