Jamaica Athletics Invitational Meet Receives $10 Million Boost from Sports Development Foundation
The inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational (JAI) Meet is set to receive a significant boost with a $10 million contribution from the Sports Development Foundation, announced by Sports Minister Olivia Grange. The meet, which has been granted World Athletics Continental Tour Silver status, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 11 at the National Stadium in Kingston.
During the launch ceremony at the AC Hotel by Marriott Kingston, Grange expressed her full support for the event, highlighting its importance in providing athletes with a platform to assess their readiness and make necessary adjustments ahead of upcoming competitions, including the Paris Olympics.
Grange emphasized the significance of welcoming international athletes from various countries, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie among participants. She extended a warm invitation to all athletes, emphasizing the dual focus on performance and constructive social interactions during the meet.
Global athletics stars such as Tobi Amusan, Julien Alfred, Abby Steiner, and Fred Kerley are among the prominent names confirmed to participate in the event. Additionally, a host of international athletes from countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Japan will also be competing.
Local talent will also be on display, with promising young athlete Jaydon Hibbert headlining the Jamaican contingent. Hibbert, a standout in men’s triple jump, recently turned professional and is looking to make a mark at the Paris Olympic Games this summer.
The meet will feature 14 exciting events, including sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws, providing a thrilling showcase of athletic talent. With top athletes from around the world set to compete, the Jamaica Athletics Invitational Meet promises to be a must-watch event for sports fans and enthusiasts alike.
