San José State University Athletics Department Shines in 2023
San José State University’s athletics department had a standout year in 2023, earning recognition as the Best College Sports Team in the Silicon Valley. The Spartans made waves both on and off the field, showcasing their talent and dedication to excellence.
On the field, the Spartans achieved a top-100 finish in the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup Standings, marking the second-highest finish in school history. The men’s basketball team secured its first Mountain West Tournament victory and postseason triumph, with standout player Omari Moore signing with the Milwaukee Bucks as the MW Player of the Year. Additionally, several Spartans made their mark in the professional ranks, with athletes like Junior Fehoko and Elijah Cooks being drafted by NFL teams.
Off the field, San José State shined in academics and community service. A record-breaking 91 student-athletes were named to the Mountain West Scholar Team for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The Spartans also earned the Mountain West Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Community Service Award for their impressive 10,000 hours of community service.
The success continued across various sports, with track & field athlete Emilia Sjostrand earning All-America honors and the women’s golf team placing 16th at the NCAA Championships. The baseball team clinched its first Mountain West regular season and tournament championships, while the men’s water polo team secured the West Coast Conference tournament title.
The football team capped off the year with a share of the Mountain West regular season championship and a third bowl appearance in four years, highlighted by a decisive win over No. 25 Fresno State. The Spartans’ achievements in 2023 have solidified their reputation as a powerhouse in collegiate athletics, earning them the title of Best College Sports Team in the Silicon Valley. #AllSpartans.
