Red Sox outlast Athletics 5-4 in 11 innings

In a thrilling extra-inning matchup, the Boston Red Sox emerged victorious over the Oakland Athletics with a 5-4 win on Tuesday night in front of a limited crowd at Oakland Coliseum. Trevor Story was the star of the game, delivering three hits and two RBIs to lead the Red Sox to victory.

The game-winning run came in the 11th inning when Wilyer Abreu scored on a double-play grounder, breaking the 4-4 tie. Abreu, who started the inning on second base as the automatic runner, advanced on Reese McGuire’s single before crossing home plate on Tyler O’Neill’s double play against Mitch Spence.

The Red Sox’s defense also played a crucial role in securing the win, with Ceddanne Rafaela making a spectacular running catch in center field to rob Shea Langeliers of extra bases in the bottom half of the 11th inning. Pitcher Josh Winckowski then closed out the game by striking out Lawrence Butler for the final out.

Manager Alex Cora praised his team’s improved defense and pitching performance, highlighting the importance of making key plays in critical moments. Winckowski, who earned the win, commended Rafaela’s game-saving catch, calling it “unbelievable.”

Despite strong performances from Langeliers and JJ Bleday, who both hit home runs for the Athletics, the Red Sox managed to rally back and tie the game in the seventh inning on Story’s run-scoring single.

With the win, the Red Sox improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Athletics fell to 2-4. The two teams will face off again on Wednesday, with Nick Pivetta set to pitch for Boston and Ross Stripling taking the mound for Oakland. Fans can expect another exciting matchup between these two competitive teams as they battle for supremacy on the diamond.
