Scotland Considering Scaled-Back Commonwealth Games in 2026, Scotstoun Likely Venue for Athletics

Scotland is considering hosting a scaled-back version of the Commonwealth Games in 2026, with a decision expected in May. The event would feature 10 to 13 sports, compared to the 18 sports showcased in Glasgow in 2014. The aim is to host the games within an eight-mile radius in Glasgow, with no public investment required.

Ian Reid, chair of Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS), expressed confidence in Scotland’s ability to host the event at a reasonable budget. The CGS is in discussions to determine which sports will be included in the scaled-back version, with aquatics and athletics being mandatory.

Reid emphasized that quality would not be compromised, and the focus would be on delivering a high-quality sporting event for athletes, spectators, and viewers. The CGS is exploring options in Glasgow to host athletics, with Scotstoun being the likely venue for the track and field events.

“The Commonwealth Games are really important to Scotland and a vital part of the pathway for our athletes to the Olympics,” Reid stated.

The CGS is looking to leverage funds from the Commonwealth Games Federation, as well as ticketing, sponsorship, and other mechanisms to support the event. Despite the reduction in the number of sports, the goal is to deliver a memorable and engaging Commonwealth Games experience for all involved. Stay tuned for updates on Scotland’s bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
