Dismal Performance by Limpopo Primary Schools Athletics Team at National Event
The Limpopo provincial primary schools athletics team faced a disappointing performance at the South African Primary School Athletics meeting held at the Oscar Mpetha Stadium at the University of Limpopo. With only two medals to show for their efforts, the team finished in last position, much to the dismay of parents and supporters.
Sources close to the event and concerned parents have pointed fingers at the lack of resources and support provided by the Education Department. Photos from the event revealed primary school learners wearing oversized running apparel, some without team tracksuits and running equipment. Athletes even reported competing on empty stomachs, highlighting the lack of proper preparation and support for the team.
The Western Cape emerged as the overall winner of the event, collecting an impressive 32 gold medals in all track and field events. This stark contrast in performance has raised questions about the commitment of the Department of Education and the Department of Sport in developing young athletes in Limpopo.
Parents expressed their disappointment, emphasizing the need for proper training camps, coaching sessions, and support for the athletes. They called for the departments to prioritize school sports and provide the necessary resources for the athletes to succeed on a national level.
Despite the grievances raised by parents, the Department of Education spokesperson, Mosebjane Kgaffe, denied any knowledge of the complaints. He defended the department’s actions regarding accommodation, food, and venue selection for the event.
As the names of the two medal-winning athletes remain unconfirmed, the focus now shifts to the future of school sports in Limpopo. With calls for better support and resources for young athletes, the hope is that the province can improve its performance and provide a platform for talented individuals to excel in athletics.
