Oakland A’s won’t add ‘Sacramento’ to its official name, but filed for a trademark anyway
The Oakland Athletics are set to make a temporary move to Sacramento, but they won’t be changing their official team name to include the city’s name. Despite this, the Major League club has filed for trademarks for ‘Sacramento A’s’ and ‘Sacramento Athletics’ in preparation for their three-year stint in California’s capital.
The team will be playing at the home of the Sacramento River Cats from 2025-27, with an option for 2028, after being unable to reach an agreement to extend their lease in Oakland. The move was announced by A’s owner John Fisher and Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé, who also owns the River Cats, at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.
While the decision to leave Oakland has disappointed many fans, the move to Sacramento is seen as a step towards potentially hosting a permanent MLB team in the region. The A’s will be the fifth home for a franchise that started in Philadelphia and later moved to Kansas City before settling in Oakland.
The move has sparked excitement in Sacramento, with local officials and fans looking forward to the economic boost and increased visibility for the city. The team will be known simply as the Athletics or A’s during their stay in Sacramento, and will share the stadium with the River Cats for the next three years.
Overall, the move to Sacramento represents a new chapter for the Oakland Athletics and the city of Sacramento, with hopes for a successful and prosperous future for both the team and the region.
