Oakland A’s to DROP the city from its team name – and become simply the ‘Athletics’ – after announcing decision to play in West Sacramento for three years before permanent move to Las Vegas
The Oakland A’s are making a major change as they prepare to move out of the Bay Area and head to Las Vegas. The team announced that they will drop the city from their team name and go by the ‘Athletics’ starting next season until their relocation is complete.
In a surprising move, the A’s will temporarily reside in Sacramento before making their way to Sin City. The team will call the 14,000-capacity Sutter Health Park their home for the next few years, with the possibility of extending their stay until 2027.
Despite spending several seasons in Sacramento, the team will not carry the city’s name in their title. Instead, they will add ‘Las Vegas’ once they move into their new $1.5 billion stadium in the desert.
The decision to move has not been well-received by Bay Area fans, who heavily protested the team’s relocation during the opening day game at home. The parking lot was filled with frustrated fans as the team played in front of a mostly empty stadium, starting the season with a 1-6 record.
The move to Sacramento comes after the City of Oakland’s final bid to keep the team in the Bay Area fell through. The A’s owner, John Fisher, expressed his excitement about the move to Las Vegas, but it remains to be seen how the team will fare in their temporary home in Sacramento.
With the A’s making big changes both on and off the field, it will be interesting to see how the team navigates the transition to a new city and stadium in the coming years. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
