University of Missouri Hires Laird Veatch as Next Athletics Director
The University of Missouri has officially announced the hiring of Laird Veatch as its next athletics director, ending a nine-week search following Desiree Reed-Francois’ departure in February. Veatch, who previously worked with Mizzou athletics in fundraising and media partner roles two decades ago, is currently the athletics director at Memphis.
Veatch’s appointment is pending approval from the UM System Board of Curators, with an official introduction expected in Columbia as soon as Friday. His start date is set for May 1, although his starting salary remains undisclosed.
UM System President and MU Chancellor Mun Choi expressed confidence in Veatch’s leadership abilities, stating, “Veatch is a proven leader with the vision we need to achieve our championship goals.” Veatch himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to the University of Missouri and is eager to elevate Mizzou Athletics to new heights.
The search committee, which included members of the UM System Board of Curators and prominent donors, was dedicated to finding the right fit for Mizzou. Bob Blitz, the search committee chair, believes Veatch will accelerate the university’s path to success in SEC athletics.
Veatch’s experience in fundraising and his success at Memphis, particularly in the realm of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, make him a strong candidate for the role. His past roles at Kansas State and Florida, as well as his aggressive approach to securing funding for athletic facilities, highlight his qualifications for the position.
As Veatch prepares to take on his new role, key priorities include advancing fundraising efforts for stadium renovations and supporting the football program under head coach Eli Drinkwitz. With Veatch’s background and experience, Mizzou is hopeful that he will lead the athletics department to unprecedented success in the coming years.
