Launch of LEA Sustainability Programme at Ngong Forest, Kenya: A Step Towards Sustainable Sports
The launch of the LEA sustainability programme at Ngong Forest in Kenya marks a significant step towards integrating environmental conservation and social responsibility into the country’s sporting community. Spearheaded by the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), Athletics Kenya, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Africa centre, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this initiative aims to create a sustainable sports environment in Kenya.
The programme was launched on the UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, highlighting the role of sports in promoting peaceful and inclusive societies. NOC-K President Paul Tergat emphasized the importance of a conflict-free environment for athletes to train and compete effectively. World Athletics Vice President Lt General (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei expressed Athletics Kenya’s commitment to sustainability, aligning with global climate change goals and supporting refugee athletes in their sporting journey.
Both NOC-K and Athletics Kenya are signatories to the Sports for Climate Action (S4CA) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, demonstrating their dedication to environmental conservation. The planting of trees at Ngong Forest symbolizes their commitment to creating green spaces and supporting nature conservation efforts.
UNEP air quality expert Dr. Aderiana Mbandi praised the initiative for addressing climate change, pollution, and environmental degradation, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in safeguarding the planet for future generations. SEI Africa Centre Director Dr. Philip Osano commended NOC-K for championing sustainability actions and integrating environmental conservation into their journey to the Paris Olympics 2024.
The launch of the LEA sustainability programme underscores the growing recognition of sports’ positive influence on social and environmental issues. As the global theme for 2024 focuses on “Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies,” initiatives like this highlight the transformative power of sports in creating a sustainable future.
