IOC President Bach suggests focusing on supporting athletes over prize money for Olympic gold medallists

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has sparked a debate by suggesting that World Athletics should reconsider offering prize money to Olympic gold medallists in Paris this year. Bach believes that the focus should be on supporting athletes who may not have the same resources as those from more privileged countries.

In April, World Athletics made headlines by announcing a $50,000 prize for Olympic champions, breaking a 128-year tradition. While some athletes welcomed this decision, others criticized World Athletics President Sebastian Coe for not consulting with other international sports federations beforehand.

Bach emphasized that the role of international sports federations is not to provide prize money, but rather to support athletes in need. He highlighted the importance of closing the quality gap between athletes from different countries, ensuring that all athletes have equal opportunities to succeed.

Despite the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, Bach expressed confidence in the security and success of the Paris Games, scheduled to begin on July 26. He reassured that athletes from all nations would compete in full respect of the Olympic Charter, without political protests on the field of play.

Bach also addressed the issue of Israeli and Palestinian athletes, stating that both Olympic committees are supported by the IOC. If Palestinian athletes fail to qualify, they will receive invitations as part of the universality quotas. Russian and Belarusian athletes, on the other hand, will compete as neutrals in Paris due to their countries’ suspensions for violating the Olympic Charter.

Overall, Bach’s comments have sparked a discussion on the role of international sports federations in supporting athletes and ensuring fair competition at the Olympic Games.
