Lab Memorial Football Carnival Expands with Introduction of Athletics Program
The Lab Memorial Football Carnival is back for its third edition, promising two days of exciting sports action at the University of Lagos Sports Complex. With 16 teams set to compete, the tournament aims to promote grassroots football development and support local talents in the community.
This year, the organizers have added an athletics program to the event, thanks to the initiative of Gbolahan Fatuga, a former national 800 meters indoor record holder. The program will provide a platform for upcoming players to showcase their football talent and for pupils and students from primary and secondary schools in Iwaya and its environs to display their athletic prowess.
Fatuga’s introduction of the athletics program is a game-changer for the carnival, expanding its scope and providing young athletes with the opportunity to secure athletic scholarships. By diversifying the sports on offer, the event not only supports local talents but also creates more opportunities for the youth in the community.
The Lab Memorial Football Carnival was established three years ago in memory of Layiwola Ayinde Balogun, a champion of youth and sports development in the Iwaya community. The tournament has since become a platform for scouted players to join professional clubs, furthering the goal of nurturing local talents.
As the event continues to grow, it is expected to unearth more hidden gems and produce future sports stars who will represent the nation on a larger stage. The Lab Memorial Football Carnival is not just a football tournament but a comprehensive sports event that celebrates the diverse talents of the youth in the community.
With the kickoff just around the corner on April 11, sports enthusiasts can look forward to an action-packed weekend of football and athletics at the University of Lagos Sports Complex. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness the next generation of sports stars in action!
