Oakland Athletics to Play at Sacramento Minor-League Park Before Move to Las Vegas

The Oakland Athletics have announced that they will be playing their home games at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento for the next three years as they await the completion of their new stadium in Las Vegas. The move comes after the team’s lease at the Oakland Coliseum expires at the end of the current baseball season.

Sutter Health Park, home of the Sacramento River Cats, has a capacity of just 14,014 and is located 85 miles away from the Coliseum. The temporary relocation is a result of the team’s inability to reach a new deal to build a new stadium to remain in Oakland.

“We explored several locations for a temporary home, including the Oakland Coliseum,” said A’s owner John Fisher. “Even with the long-standing relationship and good intentions on all sides in the negotiations with Oakland, the conditions to achieve an agreement seemed out of reach.”

The move to Vegas was approved by MLB owners in November, making the Athletics the second Oakland sports franchise to relocate to the Nevada city after the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders. The last MLB team to relocate was the Montreal Expos in 2005.

The Athletics franchise has a long history, beginning in Philadelphia in 1901 before moving to Kansas City in 1954 and then to Oakland in 1967. The team’s move to Vegas marks a new chapter in their storied history.

As the Athletics prepare for their final season in Oakland, fans can expect the team to honor and celebrate their time in the city before making the move to their new temporary home in Sacramento. Stay tuned for more details on how the team plans to bid farewell to Oakland and embrace their new chapter in Las Vegas.
