In a thrilling pitching duel, left-hander JP Sears of the Oakland Athletics took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Texas Rangers, ultimately leading his team to a 1-0 victory in the rubber game of their three-game series on Thursday in Arlington, Texas.
Sears, making just his 46th start in the major leagues, was dominant on the mound, walking three, striking out five, and allowing only one hit over seven innings. Seth Brown provided the lone run of the game with a home run in the second inning, while Texas starter Jon Gray put up a strong performance as well, striking out nine over five innings.
The 28-year-old Sears kept the Rangers at bay, allowing only one runner to reach scoring position through six innings. However, in the seventh inning, Adolis Garcia broke up the no-hitter with a line drive to left field, marking the only hit of the game for Texas.
Despite the hit, Sears’ impressive outing was enough to secure the win for the Athletics. Austin Adams came in to relieve Sears and closed out the game, with Mason Miller pitching a flawless ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.
The victory marked the fourth win in five games for Oakland, who also clinched their second consecutive series win. With momentum on their side, the Athletics will look to continue their success as they face the Washington Nationals in their upcoming series.
