St. Louis Cardinals edge Oakland Athletics 3-2 with Lynn’s strong pitching and late-game heroics
The St. Louis Cardinals continued their winning ways on Tuesday night, taking down the Oakland Athletics 3-2 for their second consecutive victory. Lance Lynn led the way on the mound, combining with two relievers to hold the A’s to just five hits.
The Cardinals’ offense was efficient, scoring all three of their runs on outs. Brendan Donovan drove in a run on a groundball, while Masyn Winn and Jordan Walker came through with back-to-back sacrifice flies in the sixth inning to give St. Louis the lead.
After trading runs in the second and third innings, the A’s took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on Kyle McCann’s first career home run. However, the Cardinals quickly responded against the Oakland bullpen, taking advantage of consecutive walks and timely hitting to regain the lead.
Lynn earned the win, pitching seven solid innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits. JoJo Romero and Ryan Helsley closed out the game, with Helsley picking up his second save in as many nights.
Nolan Arenado led the Cardinals’ offense with two singles, while McCann paced the A’s with two hits and two RBIs. Seth Brown also contributed with a double and a single for Oakland.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 3-2 on their Western trip. Up next, they will continue their road trip with a series against the Cleveland Guardians before heading to face the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.
