NAGPUR TO HOST SENIOR STATE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER 45 YEARS

After a long gap of 45 years, Nagpur is set to host the Senior State Athletics Championship, marking a significant milestone for the city’s sports community. The Maharashtra Athletics Association has finally agreed to the requests of the Nagpur District Athletics Association (NDAA) to host the 72nd Maharashtra State Senior Athletics Championship at the newly laid synthetic track of Nagpur University from June 1 to 3.

NDAA secretary Sharad Suryawanshi expressed his excitement about the upcoming championship, highlighting the importance of having a synthetic track for such a prestigious event. The last time Nagpur hosted the senior state meet was back in 1979, showcasing the significance of this year’s championship.

Athletes participating in the senior state championship will have the opportunity to qualify for the 63rd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, which is a crucial event for Olympic qualification. Additionally, athletes will also be selected for the National Open Athletics Championship and the National Youth (U-18) athletics meet, further highlighting the importance of the Nagpur championship in the national athletics calendar.

With over 600 athletes expected to participate in 32 track and field events, the senior state championship promises to be a thrilling competition for both athletes and spectators. The decision to host the championship in Nagpur is a testament to the city’s growing stature in the sports community.

The presence of former athlete and current president of the Athletics Federation of India, Adille Sumariwalla, adds an extra layer of significance to the championship. Sumariwalla’s personal connection to Nagpur, having won a gold medal in the 100m sprint race in 1979, further highlights the importance of this event for the city.

Overall, the upcoming Senior State Athletics Championship in Nagpur promises to be a memorable event for athletes, officials, and spectators alike, showcasing the city’s growing prominence in the world of athletics.
