NFL Linebacker Bobby Okereke Hosts American Football Clinic in Barbados
The Barbados Under-19 cricketers had a unique experience yesterday as they received American football tips from NFL linebacker Robert Okereke. Okereke, who plays for the New York Giants, was part of a youth clinic organized by the Barbados Tourism Management Inc (BTMI) in collaboration with the NFL team.
The partnership between the BTMI and the New York Giants will see players from the NFL team visiting the island annually to host camps and educate young athletes about American football. The clinic, held at the Maxwell Sports Club, Briar Hall, allowed the cricketers to participate in various American football drills under Okereke’s guidance.
Okereke expressed his satisfaction with the cricketers’ coachability and competitive spirit, despite their unfamiliarity with American football. He emphasized the importance of community engagement and education, stating that the experience was not only about sports but also about cultural exchange.
Director of Community Relations and Youth Football with the New York Giants, Ethan Medley, highlighted the universal language of sports and the joy of sharing the love for American football with people from different backgrounds. Along with hosting the clinic, Medley and Okereke also took the opportunity to learn about Barbados’ culture, including road tennis and cricket.
Overall, the event was a success, with the cricketers gaining valuable insights into American football and the NFL players enjoying their time in Barbados. The partnership between the BTMI and the New York Giants promises exciting opportunities for young athletes in Barbados to learn and engage with a new sport.
