Birmingham City closer to new stadium as American owners purchase land

Birmingham City’s American owners, Knighthead, have taken a significant step towards building a new stadium after acquiring land near their current home at St Andrew’s. The 48-acre former Birmingham Wheels site in Bordesley is set to become the club’s new home, with plans to move by August 2029.

Chairman Tom Wagner is leading the ambitious project, estimated to cost between £2-3bn. Despite the team’s current struggles in the Championship, Wagner remains confident that relegation would not affect the long-term plans for the new stadium and training facilities.

The new site, within walking distance of the city centre, is expected to create a “world-class Sports Quarter” and generate 3,000 jobs. Talks with various stakeholders, including the council and West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, have been ongoing to secure the necessary funding and support for the project.

Wagner’s vision for the club’s future includes a multi-use stadium, high-performance training facilities, and mixed-use real estate development. The goal is to not only enhance the fan experience but also make a positive impact on the city of Birmingham as a whole.

In addition, Knighthead co-owner and American Football legend Tom Brady is expected to play a hands-on role in shaping the infrastructure to benefit player performance. With Brady’s expertise and experience, the club aims to support players in extending their careers and achieving excellence on the pitch.

Overall, Birmingham City’s ambitious plans for a new stadium and sports quarter signal a bright future for the club and the city, showcasing the determination and vision of the ownership group led by Tom Wagner.
