Roman Gabriel: Remembering the NFL Quarterback with a Big Size and Big Arm

Roman Gabriel, the former NFL quarterback known for his big size and big arm, passed away at the age of 83. Gabriel, who was the No. 2 draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 1962, left a lasting legacy in the league.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 235 pounds, Gabriel was considered a giant for a quarterback in his era. Despite playing during a time when running the ball was the norm, he still holds the Rams’ team record with 154 touchdown passes.

Gabriel, the first Filipino-American quarterback in the NFL, was named the league MVP in 1969. His son, Roman Gabriel III, announced his father’s passing on social media, revealing that he died peacefully at home of natural causes.

Throughout his career, Gabriel played 11 years for the Rams and five years with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was known not only for his on-field performance but also for his mentorship to younger players. Retired quarterback Ron Jaworski, who was backed up by Gabriel on the Eagles in his final season, praised him as both a player and a man.

After retiring from the NFL, Gabriel ventured into broadcasting, coaching, and even acting. He appeared in movies alongside Hollywood legends like John Wayne and Rock Hudson, as well as in popular TV shows of the time.

Gabriel’s impact on and off the field will always be remembered by fans and players alike. His contributions to the game of football and his larger-than-life personality will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who knew him.
