Challenging Winter Training Leads to World Cup Gold for 29-Year-Old Rower from Cheltenham
Cheltenham rower George Ross has overcome challenging winter training conditions to kick off his season with a bang, securing World Cup gold in the men’s pair alongside Ollie Wynne-Griffith in Varese.
Despite struggling with disruptive weather at his training base in Caversham, Ross and Wynne-Griffith managed to trust themselves and come out on top in Italy. Looking ahead, Ross emphasized the importance of the upcoming European Championships as they continue their journey towards the Olympics.
The duo, who have been friends since their school days, are no strangers to success, having claimed silver at the World Championships in Belgrade in 2023. Their victory in Varese marks a strong start to the season as they aim for another shot at Olympic glory.
Reflecting on their performance, Wynne-Griffith highlighted the importance of staying focused on their own race strategy rather than getting caught up in the competition. With a record-breaking World Cup win under their belts, the pair is determined to continue their success on the international stage.
As they prepare for the European Championships in Hungary, Ross and Wynne-Griffith are focused on fine-tuning their middle kilometer performance, a key area of focus during their winter training. With the support of British Rowing and the National Lottery Sports Fund, the duo is determined to make their mark in the rowing world.
