14th Annual AUSPY Awards Honor Student-Athletes Maddie Penta and Johni Broome
AUBURN, Ala. – The 14th annual AUSPY Awards took place at the Gogue Performing Arts Center, honoring standout student-athletes from Auburn University. Maddie Penta of the softball team and Johni Broome from the men’s basketball team emerged as the Student-Athletes of the Year, showcasing their exceptional performances throughout the 2023-24 athletic year.
Penta, the 2023 SEC Pitcher of the Year, had a remarkable season on the mound, tallying 303 strikeouts and a 1.71 ERA. Her dominance earned her All-America honors and solidified her as one of the top pitchers in program history. On the other hand, Broome led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding, recording 14 double-doubles and guiding the team to the SEC Tournament championship. His stellar play earned him consensus All-America honors and recognition on the All-SEC First Team.
The AUSPY Awards also recognized other outstanding achievements within Auburn Athletics. The women’s basketball team’s thrilling victory over defending national champion LSU was voted as the War Eagle Moment, while Equestrian and men’s basketball were honored as the Teams of the Year for their impressive performances.
Individual awards were also handed out, with Ike Irish from baseball and Lawson Ficken from swimming and diving winning Newcomer of the Year AUSPYs. LJ Knox from soccer and Ryan Eshleman from men’s golf were recognized for sportsmanship, and Cassie Stevens from gymnastics and Aidan Stoffle from swimming and diving received Scholar-Athlete of the Year AUSPYs.
The event concluded with the presentation of the David Housel Spirit of Auburn Award to gymnast Sophia Groth and men’s basketball player Dylan Cardwell for their selfless contributions to their teams. The AUSPY Awards celebrated the dedication and excellence of Auburn’s student-athletes, highlighting their achievements on and off the field.
