Hockey Dominates Pride in Sport Awards with Nine Wins

In a groundbreaking night for the hockey community, the sport has taken center stage at the annual Pride in Sport Awards in Melbourne, leading all sports with an impressive nine awards. The awards celebrate the hockey community’s dedication to LGBTQ+ inclusion and recognition of individuals and organizations making a difference in the space.

One of the highlights of the evening was current Hockeyroo #501 Greta Hayes winning the prestigious LGBTQ+ Role Model of the Year award for her outstanding work in the community. Hayes, a proud advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, was recognized for her efforts in promoting inclusivity and acceptance within the hockey community and beyond.

In addition to Hayes’ well-deserved win, eight hockey organizations and clubs were also honored with gold, silver, or bronze status at the awards ceremony. Hockey Australia received the highest recognition for the first time, while Hockey ACT was recognized for the second year in a row, highlighting their ongoing commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion.

The Pride in Sport Index, developed by the Australian Human Rights Commission and Sport Australia, is used to assess sporting organizations’ inclusivity within the LGBTQ+ community. The index serves as a benchmark for measuring progress and promoting diversity and acceptance in sports.

AIS Thrive with Pride, Hockey Australia, and NSW Pride ambassador Greta Hayes were among the big winners of the night, showcasing the collective effort to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment in hockey. Hayes expressed her gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of ongoing work in the LGBTQ+ and inclusivity space.

Hockey Australia congratulated all the winners and emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone involved in the sport. The awards ceremony was a testament to the progress made in promoting diversity and acceptance in hockey, and the community looks forward to continuing this important work in the future.
