Girls Flag Football Officially Sanctioned by CHSAA in Colorado
Girls flag football in Colorado has officially been sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association, marking a significant milestone for the sport. The decision, made at CHSAA’s Legislative Council meeting, comes after a successful pilot program and growing interest in the sport.
With 86 percent of voters in favor of the proposal, girls flag football will now join the list of sanctioned sports in the upcoming fall season. This move not only provides more opportunities for female athletes but also aligns with the national trend of increasing girls’ participation in sports.
The sport’s inclusion as a scholarship sport at the college level has also played a role in its sanctioning. Vista PEAK Prep graduate Leilani Caamal’s scholarship to Ottawa University in Kansas is just one example of the opportunities that flag football can provide for young athletes.
Jamboree events and widespread participation in Aurora high schools have demonstrated the sport’s popularity and potential for growth. With 50 schools across 10 districts in the state offering flag football, female athletes now have even more options to pursue their passion for the game.
CHSAA Board of Directors Ryan West emphasized the organization’s commitment to equitable participation for female athletes in Colorado. The addition of flag football as a sanctioned sport further reinforces this commitment and expands the opportunities available to female athletes in the state.
As the 11th fall sanctioned sport, girls flag football now stands alongside other popular sports like football, volleyball, and soccer. This milestone not only recognizes the growing popularity of the sport but also highlights Colorado’s leadership in promoting girls’ participation in sports and activities.
