F1 Commission to Discuss Proposal to Extend Points System to Include 11th and 12th Places

The Formula 1 Commission is set to discuss a proposal that could potentially change the points system for the sport starting from the 2025 season. The proposal, put forward by one of the F1 teams, suggests extending the points-paying positions from 10th place to 12th place in races.

Currently, F1 awards points to the top 10 finishers in a race, with a breakdown of 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. The new proposal would see the points breakdown change to 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1, allowing more drivers to score points in each race.

The F1 Commission, which includes representatives from Formula 1, the FIA, and the 10 teams on the grid, will discuss the proposal in their upcoming meeting on Thursday. While the idea is on the agenda for initial discussion, further consideration and discussion will be needed before any changes are implemented.

The proposal comes at a time when the top five teams – Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, and Aston Martin – have dominated the top 10 positions in the first five races of the 2024 season. With only Haas and RB breaking into the points places so far, the potential change in the points system could provide more opportunities for midfield and backmarker teams to score points.

F1 has a history of tweaking its points system, with the current structure in place since 2010. Various changes have been made over the years, including the addition of a fastest lap bonus point in 2019 and points for the Sprint format introduced in 2021.
