Mark Bennett of Edinburgh has backed the new brain-cooling treatment for sports-related concussion, known as ‘PolarCap’, which is currently being trialled in professional rugby union. The treatment, which can be delivered pitchside, involves targeted cooling to the head and neck for 45 to 60 minutes following a concussion injury.

The origins of ‘PolarCap’ stem from a five-year study in professional ice hockey in Sweden, where it showed potential in reducing long-term concussion absence. Erik Andersson, the CEO of PolarCool, retired from professional ice hockey due to concussions and now advocates for the treatment.

Dr. Michael Dunlop, the medical advisor to the United Rugby Championship (URC) and team doctor at Edinburgh Rugby, highlights the importance of cooling the brain quickly after a concussion to prevent metabolic dysfunction. A recent study published in the Journal of Neurotrauma supports the use of ‘PolarCap’ in reducing symptoms and shortening return-to-play time for athletes.

Scotland centre Mark Bennett experienced the benefits of ‘PolarCap’ firsthand after suffering a concussion in a URC match. He emphasizes the importance of research and information in aiding players to make informed decisions about their health and safety in contact sports.

The introduction of ‘PolarCap’ as an adjunctive treatment in the return-to-play process is seen as a positive step in improving concussion management in sports.
