ASOIF Criticizes World Athletics for Awarding Prize Money to Olympic Gold Medallists

The decision by World Athletics to award prize money to gold medallists in its events has sparked controversy within the Olympic sports community. The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) has expressed its disapproval of the move, stating that it undermines the values of Olympism.

In a statement released on Friday, ASOIF criticized World Athletics president Sebastian Coe’s announcement that track and field gold medallists at the Paris Games will receive $50,000. This decision, according to ASOIF, goes against the spirit of the Olympics, where the focus should be on the competition and not on monetary rewards.

ASOIF, which represents 30 full members and two associate members, highlighted the disparity it creates among athletes, with those lower down the standings being disregarded. The organization also pointed out that not all Olympic sports have the financial means to offer prize money to their athletes.

While ASOIF acknowledged the importance of rewarding athletes for outstanding performances, it emphasized that any surplus revenue should be invested in the development and integrity of the sport. The organization also expressed disappointment that Coe had not consulted with fellow federations before making the announcement.

In response, World Athletics defended its decision, stating that it is committed to empowering athletes and recognizing their contribution to the success of the Olympic Games. The federation explained that the prize money comes from the IOC’s revenue share allocation and is a way to give back to the athletes who make the Games a global spectacle.

The debate over prize money for Olympic medallists is likely to continue as different sports federations navigate the balance between rewarding athletes and upholding the values of the Olympic movement.
