UGA Athletics Parts Ways with Gymnastics Head Coach Courtney Kupets Carter
UGA Athletics announced on Friday evening that the gymnastics program would be parting ways with head coach Courtney Kupets Carter. Kupets Carter, who had been with the Bulldogs since May 2017, leaves behind a record of 38-60 during her tenure.
Despite the team’s lopsided win-loss record, Kupets Carter managed to keep the Bulldogs consistently ranked in the top 25. Under her guidance, seven gymnasts earned 22 All-America honors, and 14 players were named to the All-SEC team.
However, Kupets Carter only had one season where her team finished above .500, with their best record coming in 2019 when they placed fourth at the SEC championships. Although the Bulldogs finished first and second at NCAA regionals that year, they were unable to advance past the NCAA semifinals.
Since then, Georgia has struggled to win more than seven matches in a season. Freshman standout Lily Smith, the team’s top gymnast in recent years, has yet to announce her decision regarding her future with the program.
Kupets Carter’s legacy at Georgia extends beyond her coaching career. As a gymnast with the Bulldogs from 2006-2009, she won four team national championships and numerous individual accolades, including eight SEC event championships and nine individual NCAA titles.
Despite her departure from coaching, Kupets Carter’s impact on Georgia gymnastics will be remembered for years to come. Athletic director Josh Brooks expressed gratitude for her contributions to the program but emphasized the need for new leadership as the Bulldogs aim for SEC and national championships in the future.
