Cardiff City FC Files Complaint Against FC Nantes Over Emiliano Sala’s Death
Cardiff City Football Club has taken a bold step in seeking justice for the tragic loss of striker Emiliano Sala by filing a complaint in a French court against Football Club de Nantes. The Welsh club is claiming losses of over £100m following a dispute over Sala’s untimely death in a plane crash in January 2019.
According to the club’s lawyer, Celine Jones, an in-depth analysis conducted by a legal expert estimated the losses to be around £104m. This analysis has been submitted to the Nantes Commercial Court in France, giving the French club until September 23 to respond.
Sala, a promising 28-year-old Argentine striker, was on his way to complete a £15m transfer from Nantes to Cardiff when the tragic accident occurred. The aftermath of the incident led to a legal battle between the two clubs, with Cardiff opting to pursue separate legal action after the Court of Arbitration in Sport ruled against their claim for damages.
The damages sought by Cardiff are not only to recover the transfer fee paid for Sala but also to compensate for additional consequential losses, including financial and reputational damage resulting from the club’s relegation from the Premier League in 2019.
Jones argued that had Sala been able to play for Cardiff, he would have undoubtedly scored goals that could have potentially saved the club from relegation. This claim is supported by the belief that Sala’s presence on the team would have made a significant impact on their performance.
The legal battle between Cardiff and Nantes continues to unfold, with both clubs awaiting the French club’s response to the latest claims. As the football world watches closely, the outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for how clubs handle similar tragic situations in the future.
