Navy Sailing Wraps Up Regular Season with Strong Performances
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team concluded its regular season this past weekend with impressive showings at two road regattas. Competing in the America Trophy at the MAISA Open Fleet Racing Championship in the Bronx, N.Y., as well as the George Washington Invitational in Washington, D.C., the Midshipmen showcased their skills and determination.
At the America Trophy, held at SUNY Maritime, Navy faced challenging conditions with puffy and shifty winds, as well as strong currents. Despite a tough day on Sunday, the team managed to secure a third-place finish overall. Standout performances came from sailors such as Nathan Smith, Ryan Wahba, and Darby Graham in the “A” division, and Evie Blauvelt, Jack Welburn, and Henry Allgeier in the “B” division.
Following the championship, Navy received multiple All-MAISA honors, with Madeline Smith earning MAISA Crew of the Year and Blauvelt being a finalist for Women’s Skipper of the Year. Additionally, several sailors were named to the First and Second Team All-MAISA.
In the George Washington Invitational, Navy fielded two teams and finished third and fourth overall. The freshmen duo of Spencer Dominguez and Josie Sherry impressed with a fourth-place finish, showcasing the depth of talent on the team.
Looking ahead, Navy is gearing up for the ICSA Team Race Championship in Boston, Mass., followed by the ICSA Women’s Team Race Championship. With their strong performances in the regular season, the Midshipmen are poised to make a splash at the national championships.
