Yankees Fall to Athletics 2-0: Boone Ejected, Rodon Shines
The New York Yankees suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss against the Oakland Athletics on Monday at Yankee Stadium, with the day starting off on a chaotic note as manager Aaron Boone was ejected just two batters into the game. The ejection came after home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt mistakenly believed Boone was arguing with him, when in fact it was a fan above the dugout.
Despite a stellar performance from pitcher Carlos Rodon, who threw seven scoreless innings, the Yankees offense failed to produce any runs. The game remained scoreless until the top of the ninth inning when the Athletics’ Zach Gelof hit a two-run home run off of Yankees pitcher Victor Gonzalez.
Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton and third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera were among the top performers for the Yankees, with Stanton recording two of the team’s top exit velocity marks and Cabrera making several impressive plays at third base.
Rodon’s outing was a bright spot for the Yankees, as he delivered his best performance since joining the team. Although he only generated six swings and misses, Rodon allowed an average exit velocity of 87.1 miles per hour.
The loss marked the third time in the last four games that the Yankees have been held to five hits or fewer, and the second time in the last three games that they have been shut out at home. The team will look to bounce back in the second game of the series against the Athletics on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.
