Western Connecticut State University Expands NCAA Team Sports and Announces Changes
Western Connecticut State University is gearing up for an exciting expansion in its NCAA sports lineup, as announced by WestConn Director of Athletics Lori Mazza. The university is set to introduce seven new teams over the next two years, bringing the total number of intercollegiate teams at WestConn to 23.
The new additions include women’s golf, men’s and women’s ice hockey, and both indoor and outdoor track & field for men and women. Recruitment for these teams will begin immediately, with the goal of enhancing the athletic opportunities available to students at the university.
Women’s golf will be paired with the existing men’s team at the Richter Park Golf Course in Danbury starting in fall 2024. The men’s and women’s track & field teams will compete in the Little East Conference during the winter and spring seasons, training at the Bethel Track and Field Training Center.
The men’s ice hockey team, currently successful at the club level, will transition to NCAA competition within the LEC starting in the 2025-26 season. The women’s team will begin at the club level in fall 2024, with plans to achieve NCAA status by 2026-27. Both teams will utilize the Danbury Ice Arena for practice and home games.
Adam Lanehart, the current men’s golf coach at WestConn, will also lead the women’s golf team starting in fall 2024. A national search will be conducted to recruit staff to coach athletes in the upcoming sports.
Mazza expressed excitement about the expanded opportunities for the WestConn community, noting the growing interest in these sports among prospective and current students. The university is committed to maintaining a dynamic and competitive sports program, with the support of the administration and community partners.
The future looks bright for WestConn Athletics, with the addition of new teams and a continued focus on providing a top-notch athletic experience for students.
