Controversy surrounds potential Blues debut for Joseph Suaalii
The race for the two Blues’ wing positions in the upcoming State of Origin series has intensified after standout performances from Josh Addo-Carr and Zac Lomax in Round 7 of the NRL. However, one player who has been in the conversation, Joseph Suaalii, is facing criticism from respected journalist Phil Rothfield due to his planned move to rugby union.
Suaalii, the talented 20-year-old Roosters star, is set to depart the NRL at the end of the season to join the NSW Waratahs in Super Rugby. Despite his potential as a winger for the Blues, Rothfield believes Suaalii should not be considered for selection due to his decision to switch codes.
“I don’t like rewarding people who have chosen to nick off and play another sport,” Rothfield expressed on the Big Sports Breakfast. “We have other options like Addo-Carr, To’o, and Lomax who are performing better this year.”
Former Blues coach Laurie Daley, however, shared a different perspective, stating that if Suaalii proves to be the best candidate for the position, he should be selected regardless of his future plans.
With the announcement of the State of Origin squads approaching, the debate over Suaalii’s potential inclusion continues. Despite differing opinions, it remains to be seen whether the young star will earn a spot on the Blues’ wing for Game I.
Maguire and Maroons coach Billy Slater will reveal their squads on May 27, with Game I scheduled to take place at Sydney’s Accor Stadium on June 5. As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on the final selections for what promises to be an exciting State of Origin series.
