Philippines’ Joanie Delgaco Qualifies for Olympics, Becomes First Female Rower
Joanie Delgaco Makes History as Philippines’ First Female Rower to Qualify for Olympics
In a historic moment for Philippine sports, Joanie Delgaco has become the first female rower from the country to qualify for the Olympics. Delgaco secured her spot in the Paris Games after an impressive performance in the World Rowing Asian and Oceanian Qualification Regatta in Chungju, South Korea.
The 26-year-old athlete finished fourth in the Final A of the women’s single sculls event, clocking a time of 7:49.39 to earn one of the five Paris berths up for grabs. Delgaco’s achievement marks a significant milestone for the Philippines, as the nation celebrates its 100th year of participation in the Summer Games.
Delgaco joins a select group of Filipino rowers who have qualified for the Olympics, including Edgardo Maerina, Benjamin Tolentino Jr., and Cris Nievarez. Reflecting on her journey to the Olympics, Delgaco expressed her disbelief at how far she has come in the sport.
“I never imagined that I’ll reach this far. Before, the stronger rowers used to get past me easily. Now, I’m able to beat them,” Delgaco shared in an interview.
With her qualification for the Paris Games, Delgaco adds to the growing list of Filipino athletes who will represent the country in various sports at the Olympics. She will join a talented roster of athletes, including pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnasts Carlos Yulo, Aleah Finnegan, and Levi Jung-Ruivivar, boxers Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio, and Aira Villegas, and weightlifters Elreen Ando, John Ceniza, and Vanessa Sarno.
Delgaco and her fellow athletes are set to undergo a month-long training camp in Metz, France, in preparation for the Paris Olympics. The Philippines will undoubtedly be cheering on Delgaco and the rest of the Olympic team as they aim for success on the world stage.
