London Marathon 2024: Women’s-Only World Record Broken by Peres Jepchirchir
Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir made history at the London Marathon, winning the women’s race in a thrilling fashion and setting a new women’s-only world record time of 2:16:16. The previous record of 2:17.01 was held by Mary Jepkosgei Keitany in London in 2017.
Jepchirchir’s victory was hard-fought, with four runners in contention down the final straight. Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa finished second with a time of 2:16:23, followed closely by Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei in third with 2:16:24, and Megertu Alemu in fourth place.
In the men’s race, Kenyan Alexander Munyao emerged victorious with a time of 2:04:01, beating out track legend Kenenisa Bekele who finished in 2:04:15. Munyao, 27, broke away from Bekele in the final miles of the race to secure his win.
Marcel Hug of Switzerland dominated the men’s wheelchair race, claiming his fourth consecutive victory with a time of 1:28:33. Catherine Debrunner, also from Switzerland, set a new course record in the women’s wheelchair race, finishing in 1:38:54.
